Faculty letter in solidarity with grad workers

by operations June 22, 2023 No Comments

Please consider signing and sharing this letter in support of 67 grad workers at UCSD wrongfully charged with misconduct for engaging in a protest at an alumni awards ceremony in May. This kind of charge, if upheld, will create a chilling effect and set a precedent for inhibiting collective action at the UCs. Community support is vital to ensuring the ability of UC community members to engage in nonviolent civil protest.

As of June 21, this petition has already been signed by over 2000 UCSD, UC and other University faculty, and graduate student and other workers. You can read the entire list of current signatories on this automatically updated searchable google doc. At this time the linked faculty petition contains the signatures of about 100 UCSD faculty and 130 other UC faculty, including only 5 from UCSB (organizational endorsements and UC faculty signatures list). We note that the majority of UCSD student protesters were from STEM fields (Biological Sciences in particular). For more information, see this May 8 UCSD Guardian article, and this June 20 Voice of San Diego article. Here is a video of the stage during the disrupted event, which was also livestreamed on twitter, if you’re interested.
