We invite you to celebrate International Workers’ Day on May 1 with UAW, UC-AFT, and EVPSA in support of our fellow university workers in AFSCME Local 3299 and UPTE-CWA 9119, who will be striking across the UCs that day. Together, AFSCME and UPTE workers represent researchers, service, patient care, skilled craft, and technical workers on our campus who have been fighting for a contract that will address the recruitment and retention crisis impacting their work, including safe staffing, fair pay, and job security. On May 1, they are striking over UC’s unfair labor practices, including the University’s imposition of a systemwide hiring freeze, which would further undermine patient care, research, and education across the state.
Please join us at Storke Tower at 12noon for a “We Make the University Work” rally and follow-up teach-ins at 1:30 PM.
We call for faculty to show up at the rally to highlight the crucial role that workers play in the university. Together, we will affirm our readyness to fight the attacks on the university by the Federal government; to reject the politics of austerity and State cuts to the UC budget, and to demand a university that will stand up to the Trump administration.
What you can do:
Find us at the SBFA table to meet and talk with colleagues about your concerns over faculty working conditions. We want to hear from you about how increasing workloads, visa revocations, hiring freezes, funding cuts, and cybersecurity programs – have affected you! Bring a colleague and invite them to join the SBFA. We will be running a membership drive on May 1. Share this flyer with your classes, students, and coworkers!
Without us, no smooth operations, no one to teach or learn, no one to hold our community to its own high standards.
