The Santa Barbara Faculty Association invites all faculty to attend our second Racial Justice Series event, a Town Hall on “Divesting from Campus Policing in the UC System and Investing in Community Alternatives” on Monday, April 26, from 4 to 5:30 PM. The event will feature Professor Charmaine Chua (UCSB, Global Studies) and Professor Terrance Wooten (UCSB, Black Studies) of the “Cops Off Campus Coalition” who will introduce their coalition and its principles, lay out the argument for disarming, defunding, and dismantling UC Police Departments, and illustrate community-based alternatives to ensuring public safety. The presentation will also connect the move to dismantle campus police forces to issues of racial justice.
The timing of this Town Hall is also connected to a nationwide “Day of Refusal” on May 3, which will initiate a month of activism culminating on May 25, the anniversary of the murder of George Floyd. You can find brief descriptions and a list of resources about Cops off Campus, Abolition May and the May 3 event HERE.
We know that faculty may be curious about the “abolitionist” movement and have questions about its aims and its relation or relevance to campus policing. We invite you to attend the Town Hall to inform yourself and engage with each other. After a presentation, we will break into groups to generate questions for Professor Chua and Professor Wooten to address in the final part of the meeting.
