Dear Colleagues,
In reminding you of the upcoming April 26 UCSB Town Hall on “Divesting from Campus Policing in the UC System and Investing in Community Alternatives,” we would also like to alert you to a timely addition to our program.
UCOP has circulated for faculty comment by May 3 four proposed revisions to the Universitywide Police Policies and Administrative Procedures (the “Gold Book”). These proposals have already raised grave concerns in the Senate committees that have reviewed them, for they appear to go in the opposite direction of both reformist and radical proposals for police reform. Given the urgency of the imposed deadline for comment, we have invited Professor Paul Amar (UCSB, Global Studies), who chairs the UC Academic Freedom Committee on the UCSB Council on Faculty Welfare, to discuss the proposals after the presentations by Professor Charmaine Chua (UCSB, Global Studies) and Professor Terrance Wooten (UCSB, Black Studies) of the “Cops Off Campus” coalition.
Our Town Hall will proceed as follows:
4:00-4:10 PM: Introduction and Welcome by Professor Ralph Armbruster, moderator (UCSB, Chican@ Studies)
4:10-4:40 PM: Presentations on Day of Refusal (May 3), dismantling UC Police Departments and community-based alternatives to ensuring public safety by professors Chua and Wooten.
4:40-4:50 PM: Analysis of the “Gold Book” amendments by Professor Amar.
4:50-5:10 PM: Breakout rooms to generate questions and concerns.
5:10-5:30 PM: Q&A with professors Amar, Chua, and Wooten.
We look forward to seeing you on Monday!
