Dear colleagues,
Some of you may have received today’s email appended below from UCSB Registrar Schmid about when you will be submitting grades or filing partial grades. We counsel faculty in solidarity with the strike to wait until the union vote on the contract becomes known to post ANY grades.
We appreciate the tremendous solidarity of faculty for our striking graduate students and urge you not to file any grades yet to respect the UAW members’ democratic process. They are voting on whether to ratify the tentative agreement by 5 pm on Friday, December 23.
Withholding grades at least until the strike vote is known gives our striking graduate students more leverage to continue the strike if the ratification vote turns out to be negative. In that case, we will send out further guidance early next week. We want you to know that many UCSB faculty and Faculty Association members continue withholding ALL grades, at least until the strike vote is known. The conclusion of the strike vote coincides with the holiday weekend, so even students who might need grades to graduate or for other reasons can wait until early next week. In fact, the administration assured us earlier that no student in any category will suffer from receiving a NG.
The UC Santa Barbara Faculty Association (SBFA) is a voluntary, dues-supported organization comprised of Academic Senate members dedicated to improving the economic status and general welfare of the UCSB faculty. We are the only organization dedicated to protecting the faculty’s basic employment rights. We invite you to join the organization if you have not done so. For more information on the strike and the SBFA, please consult our website: https://ucsbfa.org.
In solidarity,
The SBFA Board and Political Action Committee

Subject: Unsubmitted Grades for Fall 2022
To: Reg eGrades <egrades@sa.ucsb.edu>
Good morning,
According to our records from the eGrades system, you have one or more courses from the Fall 2022 term that are not yet submitted. At this time, I’m trying to get a better feel for when grades for these courses might be available. If you would please reply to this email with an estimate of your timeline or letting me know if grades will be delayed until resolution of the strike, I would greatly appreciate it.
If grades will not be available until the resolution of the strike and you are willing and able to submit grades for the subset of your students that have a more immediate need (e.g. Fall 2022 candidates to graduate, EAP reciprocity students returning to their home institution, etc.), please let me know that as well and I should be able to provide you with a list.
If you’ve already reached out to the eGrades helpdesk regarding your courses, you may disregard this inquiry.
Thank you very much and I hope you have a happy holiday season.
Regards,
Anthony
